Dietitian in Sangrur

Diet plans built around Punjabi home food, for weight loss, PCOS, thyroid and diabetes. By Dt. Alka Pal, M.Sc. (Foods & Nutrition), who practised in Sangrur for four years.

In short: Dt. Alka Pal built her practice in Sangrur, and most of her clients are still from Sangrur and the towns around it. Consultations now run on phone, video and WhatsApp, so nothing changed for her Punjab clients except the travel. Plans are made from Punjabi kitchen food: roti, dal, saag, dahi, paneer and chaas stay in. Rated 4.9 out of 5 by 70+ clients on Google.

Four years in Sangrur, and the clients who stayed

Dt. Alka practised in Sangrur for about four years before moving to Noida. The practice did not start again from scratch after the move, because most of her clients simply continued on WhatsApp and video. That is unusual, and it says something specific about the work: plans that fit a Punjabi household survive a change of city, because they were never built on imported food or supplements in the first place.

She now runs a clinic in Sector 70, Noida, and consults online across Punjab, the rest of India, and for families abroad whose parents still live here.

It has been a wonderful experience with Alka . Actually you follow her like a kid when it is about your health and diet. She has been very inspiring and motivating throughout my journey of weight loss. Apart from this she is an adorable person who keeps on guiding about your healthy life style. When it actually comes to the weight loss, one has to be very committed and full of patience, and it would be apt to say here that she is wonderful in her job. My best wishes to her and all her followers and no doubt I’m still following her.😍

Messages clients have sent her directly:

“Mera weight kaafi kam hua hai, thyroid bhi control mein aa gaya hai aur BP bhi normal range mein hai now. I feel so much better, lighter and more active. Thank you so much for your guidance and support!”

Punjabi food is not the problem

Most diet advice handed to a Punjabi family starts by deleting the food they actually eat. Give up roti. Give up ghee. Give up lassi. It fails within a fortnight, and the client concludes that dieting does not work for them.

Look at the traditional Punjabi plate honestly and most of it is sound nutrition: dal and rajma for protein and fibre, dahi and chaas for gut health and calcium, sarson and bathua saag for iron, makki and bajra flour for fibre, seasonal vegetables cooked at home. The problem is rarely the dish. It is four specific things:

  • The fat is poured, not measured. Ghee and white makhan are excellent foods in teaspoons and a problem in tablespoons. Four extra teaspoons a day is roughly 180 calories, which is about 7 kg in a year.
  • Portions were built for farm work that no longer happens. A generation that walked the fields all day could carry five parathas. The same portions with a desk job, a car and a tractor behind the house will not fit.
  • Sugar arrives as a drink. Sweet lassi, sweetened chai four or five times a day, and cold drinks at every gathering add up faster than any meal.
  • Hospitality is measured in servings. Refusing a second helping is treated as a complaint about the cooking. This is cultural, not nutritional, and it needs a plan rather than willpower.

The Punjabi staples, and what actually changes

FoodThe honest verdictWhat changes in the plan
Sarson da saag with makki di rotiOne of the best meals in Indian cooking: iron, fibre, and a coarse flour that digests slowlyNothing, except the makhan on top. A teaspoon, not a slab. Add dahi for protein.
Aloo parathaNot banned, but one paratha with butter can cross 350 caloriesStuff with paneer, methi, mooli or mixed vegetables instead of only potato, cook on a thin layer of oil, and eat it with dahi rather than more butter
Sweet lassiA glass can reach 250 calories, almost all from sugarSalted lassi or plain chaas on ordinary days; sweet lassi becomes an occasion, not a habit
Desi ghee and white makhanGenuinely good fats, and genuinely 45 calories per teaspoonMeasured with a spoon into the dal or on the roti, with a daily total that is decided in advance
Rajma, chole and dalThe protein backbone of a vegetarian Punjabi diet, and badly underusedIncreased, not reduced. A fuller katori of dal with a smaller portion of rice is the single most effective swap in most plans.
Paneer and dahiPunjab’s dairy is an advantage most states do not haveKept daily. Grilled or bhurji paneer rather than malai gravies; plain dahi rather than sweetened.
Chole bhature, kadhi pakora, tikkiDeep-fried maida and besan, eaten as a mealTreated as a weekend outing rather than a Tuesday lunch. Kadhi without the pakoras is still kadhi.
Butter chicken and malai dishesThe cream and butter, not the chicken, is the issueTandoori, grilled or curry-style chicken and fish. See calories in butter chicken.
Pinni, panjiri, gajar halwa, gurWinter energy foods, 250 to 350 calories each, and jaggery is still sugarOne pinni a day in winter, counted, rather than four because they are in the house
Kadah prasad and langarPart of the week for many familiesTaken as prasad and counted as that day’s sweet. The langar dal and roti themselves fit a plan easily.

A week of Punjabi meals that fits a plan

DayBreakfastLunchDinner
MondayBesan or paneer chilla with chutney2 rotis, rajma, salad, dahiMoong dal khichdi with a teaspoon of ghee
TuesdayStuffed methi paratha (1, thin oil) with dahi2 rotis, dal, bhindi, saladPaneer bhurji with 1 roti
WednesdayVegetable dalia or oats2 rotis, chole, cucumber raitaVegetable and dal soup with 1 roti
ThursdaySprouts or 2 boiled eggsRajma with 1 katori rice and saladGrilled paneer or chicken with sauteed vegetables
FridayMoong chilla2 makki or bajra rotis with saag and dahiKadhi (no pakora) with 1 roti
SaturdayPoha with peanuts2 rotis, paneer sabzi, saladLight khichdi or dal with a green sabzi
SundayFamily breakfast, controlled portionThe normal family meal, with salad first and a measured grain portionSoup, salad and dahi

A general example, not a prescription. Your own portions depend on weight, reports, medicines, work and how much you move. The free quick body check gives your starting numbers, and the calorie tracker covers Indian foods in katoris and rotis.

Weddings, Lohri and the wedding season

Punjab’s social calendar is dense, and a plan that collapses every time there is a function is not a plan. What works, and what Dt. Alka’s clients are coached through:

  • Never arrive hungry. A bowl of dahi or a handful of roasted chana before leaving removes most of the damage at the starter counter.
  • Decide before you go whether this is a normal day or an occasion. Both are allowed. Deciding at the buffet is what fails.
  • Tandoori counter first, salad alongside, then one plate of the main food rather than grazing across three.
  • Alcohol counts. A peg is roughly 60 to 100 calories before mixers, it increases appetite, and it is a direct contributor to fatty liver, which is common in the region.
  • Return to normal the next morning rather than fasting to compensate. Skipping the next day is what turns one function into a week off plan.

What people in this part of Punjab usually come with

  • Weight that will not move, often with an untested or undertreated thyroid behind it. See the thyroid diet plan.
  • PCOS in younger women, frequently after years of being told only to lose weight. See the PCOS diet plan.
  • Type 2 diabetes in the family, often two generations at once. See the diabetes diet plan.
  • Fatty liver found on a routine ultrasound, usually with no symptoms at all.
  • Weight after delivery, where the forty-day traditional diet is followed well but nothing is planned for the months after. See the postpartum diet.
  • Parents of NRI families, where sons and daughters abroad arrange the consultation and the parent follows the plan at home.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a clinic in Sangrur?

Not now. Dt. Alka practised in Sangrur for about four years and now consults Sangrur clients online by video, phone and WhatsApp. Her clinic is in Sector 70, Noida. Most of her Punjab clients have continued online since the move.

Is an online consultation as good as sitting in front of the dietitian?

For diet work, yes. The assessment, the plan and the follow-ups are identical; you share your weight and measurements from home. What matters is the quality of the plan and whether someone answers when you have a question on a Tuesday evening.

Will I have to give up roti, ghee and lassi?

No. Roti stays, ghee is measured rather than removed, and chaas or salted lassi replaces sweet lassi on ordinary days. A plan that deletes Punjabi food is a plan nobody follows past the second week.

Can the whole family follow one plan?

The same kitchen can serve everyone, which is the point. Each person gets their own portions and adjustments: a diabetic father, a daughter with PCOS and a mother who wants to lose weight can eat the same dal and sabzi in different quantities.

What do I need to start?

A phone with WhatsApp, a weighing scale, and any blood reports from the last six months. A measuring tape helps. If you have no reports, Dt. Alka will tell you which ones are worth getting.

Which language are consultations in?

Hindi or English, whichever suits you, and the diet plan is written in the same.

What does it cost?

It depends on the programme length. Message on WhatsApp and the options will be explained before you commit to anything.

How soon will I see a change?

Most clients notice energy and digestion improving within the first two weeks. Weight typically moves at 2 to 4 kg a month, and reports such as sugar, lipids and thyroid are usually rechecked after two to three months.
